September 2005: Autocategorization

Purchase an archived recording with accompanying slides- $50 USD

Description:

One of the goals of a taxonomy is to improve search. Some search vendors have tools that either generate taxonomies based on content or group documents into clusters based on taxonomic terms. The goal is to improve the ability to extract meaningful structure from a body of content.

Search and classification tools are getting better at this... But how good are they really? What are the considerations? What works and what doesn't work?

  • What are the differences between auto categorization, entity extraction and text mining?
  • Does automatic taxonomy generation work?
  • How can various types of tools be applied to challenges of untagged content?
  • What is practical and realistic?
  • What are the vendor claims and what is the truth behind those claims?

In this call, we'll sort through the options and hear from search expert Stephen Arnold who will debunk some of the claims of search and taxonomy generation vendors. We'll also hear from me, Seth Earley, and Marcia Morante. Marcia and I will talk about various classes of technologies and vendor offerings.
