Description:
What if we let users drive the taxonomy?
There is a lot of dialogue and research being conducted on folksonomies - also known as social tagging. Is it effective? How can we use folksonomy in the corporate environment?
Emma Tonkin will talk about how research projects in recent years have centered around the analysis and description of user tagging practice and the resulting data sets. She will provide a brief description of our approach towards data collection and analysis of large tag sets, and highlight a few potential uses for a successful model of user tag sets.
Laurie Damianos will describe an ongoing technology investigation at MITRE to assess the value and utility of social bookmarking on a corporate intranet. They hypothesize that social bookmarking would be useful in this environment for resource management, information sharing and discovery, expert finding, and social networking. She will discuss features of the prototype system deployed and early analysis of findings on adoption, usage, and social influences. She will conclude with our challenges and plans for future development and integration into the enterprise
Presenters:
Seth Earley, Earley & Associates:
Seth Earley is founder and senior consultant for Earley & Associates, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in knowledge, content and document management systems with a focus on taxonomy development and search integration. With 20 plus years in the technology field, he has been involved in knowledge and content management processes for the past 14 years.
Laurie Damianos, MITRE
Laurie Damianos has been with MITRE for over 10 years. Her interests focus on human-computer interaction, specifically design and development of usable and useful systems for real problems and real users, applications of user-centered studies, and research into evaluation methodologies. Ms Damianos is currently involved in fielding onomi, a social bookmarking tool on MITRE's intranet. As task lead, she is interested in collecting bookmarking data and analyzing usage patterns for better understanding social trends and influences.
Ms Damianos received a B.S. in Math & Computer Science and a B.S. in the Biological Sciences from Carnegie Mellon University. Before joining MITRE, Laurie designed and developed long term forecasting software for the automotive industry (at DRI/McGraw- Hill and EDS) and also participated in Carnegie Mellon University's Advanced Computing for Science Education (ACSE) project which designed, built, and assessed a multi-media science learning environment.
Emma Tonkin, University of Bath
Emma Tonkin is an Interoperability Focus Officer working for UKOLN at the University of Bath. She is working towards a PhD at the University of Bristol, in the area of wearable and ubiquitous computing. Her current project is the IEMSR, a metadata schema registry designed to support registration, use and reuse of DC and LOM metadata schemas and profiles. She serves as co-moderator of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative's Schema Registry community, and as a member of the DCMI advisory board. As her background is in human-computer interaction, her major interest is in developing an understanding of user behaviour and the factors that influence the uptake and use of these technologies.
