Taxonomy Management in SharePoint

This in-depth session looks at the core SharePoint information architecture components and how taxonomies and faceted search can improve findability. The first presentation shares tips and techniques for how to leverage taxonomy and metadata to improve navigation and search in your SharePoint portal, and discusses the tool’s limitations and potential solutions for complex taxonomic structures and faceted search, including custom development and third-party add-ons. Wlodarczyk explains how hierarchical metadata is not SharePoint’s strong suit and shares a range of add-ons and third-party tools for taxonomy and tagging that work in the SharePoint environment. He talks about the technological options, from low-cost web parts to larger tools with multiple taxonomy, tagging and search capabilities. McNulty looks at the new managed metadata services for managing taxonomies, folksonomies, tags, metadata, and content types in SharePoint 2010.

Jeff Carr has been developing technology and information management solutions for over ten years and is currently a Senior Information Architect, Search Consultant with Earley & Associates. He holds responsibility for the development of methodologies, approaches and quality programs around the design and implementation of information solutions that leverage SharePoint and related technologies.

Jeff specializes in user centered information design by employing a holistic approach to problem solving based on experience across multiple disciplines including information architecture, taxonomy, metadata, search engine optimization, enterprise content management and enterprise search. He has been responsible for the strategy, development and implementation of numerous successful initiatives both large and small and has a keen understanding of the relationship between business strategy and information technology.

In addition to working as a practitioner, he is both an author and presenter. He has written articles on SharePoint for AIIM’s Digital Landfill blog, KMWorld Magazine, ASIS&T, CMSWire, EndUserSharePoint and NothingButSharePoint.
