Your company has recognized the value of classification. Great! Now, how do you manage it? You've begun the derivation process or been through one or more iterations. But things change -- products, markets, offerings, competition, customer needs and on and on. New stakeholders want to apply their perspective to the taxonomy, or try to develop their own branches and nodes to reflect their audience needs. There is a pressure from the business to change the taxonomy and cause it to splinter and diverge. Subject matter experts, new hires, and sponsors all think their view is best.

In this session we'll learn how tow large organizations deal with governance policies, and processes.

We'll hear Christine Connors of Raytheon and Marti Heyman of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu about how they deal with governance and how governance policies will vary depending on the phase of the taxonomy program (creation, implementation, maintenance) and the size of the project. We'll look at:

Seth Earley

President & CEO , Earley & Associates

Seth has been implementing content management and knowledge management projects for over 14 years and has been in the technology field for 20 + years. He is founder of the Boston Knowledge Management Forum and co-author of Practical Knowledge Management from the IBM Press. He is former adjunct professor at Northeastern University, where he taught graduate courses in Knowledge Management Infrastructure and E Business Strategy. He was 2009 Co-Chair of the Metadata Committee, NDIIPP Education and Outreach for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

Christine Connors

Christine Connors has extensive experience in taxonomy, ontology and metadata design and development. Prior to forming TriviumRLG Ms. Connors was the Global Director of Semantic Technology Solutions for Dow Jones, responsible for partnering with business champions across Dow Jones to improve digital asset management and delivery. Prior to joining Dow Jones Ms. Connors was a knowledge architect at Intuit, where she was responsible for introducing semantic technologies to online content management and search.

Ms. Connors is a certified Six Sigma Specialist, and is a member of both the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) and the Special Libraries Association. Christine is Organizer of the Philadelphia and Princeton Semantic Web Meetups, and Assistant Organizer of the New York Semantic Web Meetup.

Ms. Connors holds a master of science degree in Library and Information Sciences from Simmons College, Boston, and a bachelor of science degree in Theatre Arts Management from Ithaca College, New York.

Marti Heyman

Global Taxonomy Manager (Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu) , Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu

Marti Heyman has been involved in the design, development, implementation and on-going maintenance of controlled vocabularies in corporate settings for the past 15 years. She also has extensive experience in the application of more generalized knowledge management practices and techniques to meet varied business challenges. She has worked in a range of for-profit settings, including a major chemical manufacturing corporation, a boutique e-business technology firm and one of the Big 4 audit & professional services firms. She earned both her MLIS and MBA degrees from Drexel University in Philadelphia.
