Taxonomy & Search

One of the reasons to create a taxonomy is to improve search results. What are the ways this can be done? What are the factors that need to be considered? How do search engines leverage taxonomies? You've heard of faceted search, how can faceted search be implemented? Faceted search will leverage metadata contained in documents, but what about less structured documents? What about tuned or targeted search? How can a taxo be leveraged with search engines?
