As both a line manager and consultant, Rich has been on the front line of the strategy-to- execution, capability based planning, and new growth platform (NGP) developments. This blend of experiences has led to the creation of many practical tools and methods to improve revenue while containing costs.
He has led a number of successful strategic alignment and turnaround projects. For example, at Intercontinental Hotels Group he helped demerge IHG from the parent company. Achieved dramatic results by strategically refocusing work around strategic capabilities, implementing cost structure reductions of 30% while strengthening brands and increasing client market capitalization. His work has been recognized with the 2004 “Excellence in Practice” citation for managing change from ASTD.

At Avery Dennison, led a new venture team that tapped into capabilities across the Avery businesses to create a new growth platform that offers medical products for patient care, including hydrocolloids, antimicrobials, surgical tape, wound care products, and ostomy supplies, and a portfolio of products for physiological monitoring for a variety of health, wellness and clinical applications. Company rebranded as Vancive Medical Technologies.
Helped identify a billion dollar plus blue ocean market for Mayo Medical Labs and identified the capabilities to dominate in that space.
At BSBSLA, led a team that transformed the traditional health plan into Integrated HealthCare Management business. The new company will reframe how the disparate components of the regional healthcare systems collaborate by bringing the right payment models, incentives, products, services, information platforms and tools to all stakeholders, providers, employers and consumers.
Other Healthcare experience include: Pharmacy Benefits Management capability modeling, and working with Providers on scenarios and payment responses to the rapidly changing landscape of healthcare.
He is the lead author of Measure Up! How to Measure Corporate Performance (Blackwell), Corporate Renaissance: The Art of Reengineering (Blackwell) and The Capable Company: Building the capabilities that make strategy work (Wiley).
