What We Learned from Assessing AI Readiness Across Fortune 1000 Organizations
Organizations are spending hundreds of millions on AI. The investment decisions are made. The vendors are selected. The pilots are running. And yet, at most of these organizations, nobody has answered a more fundamental question: are the foundations in place to support what you are building?
This paper presents what EIS learned from assessing AI readiness across a cross-industry cohort of Fortune 1000 organizations. The patterns are consistent. The blind spots are predictable. And the path forward is not about model selection or vendor comparison. It is about foundations.
The data is not ambiguous. According to an RSM survey, 91% of middle market executives report that their organizations are using AI. But 53% describe themselves as only somewhat prepared for AI implementation. Only 8% describe themselves as very well prepared. The top barriers cited are data quality, security, and governance, not model performance.
The Four Domains of AI Readiness
EIS evaluates AI readiness across four domains: Knowledge Readiness, Operational Readiness, Technical Readiness, and Governance Readiness. The weakest domain constrains the whole. An organization can have strong technical infrastructure and minimal knowledge readiness. The AI system will behave like a minimal-readiness organization regardless of the technology investment.
Five Patterns from the Field
Across the assessment cohort, five patterns emerge with enough consistency to warrant attention from any organization evaluating AI readiness.
- Technology is ahead of knowledge. Organizations have the tools to deploy AI at scale. They do not have the structured, governed content to support it.
- Governance exists on paper. It does not exist in execution. Policies are defined. The content those policies depend on is not accurate, structured, or retrievable.
- People in the same organization disagree about what is true. Perception gaps of 21 points or more between practitioners at the same organization signal a deeper alignment problem.
- Cross-functional collaboration is the weakest factor, consistently. Average score of 2.0 out of 5.0 across the entire cohort, regardless of industry or AI investment level.
- AI output monitoring is anecdotal, not systematic. Most organizations have a way to report errors. Few have a systematic process to diagnose and fix them.
