Product Taxonomy Design Delivers Best-in-Class eCommerce Experience for Industrial Supplies Website

Challenge

This broad line supplier of maintenance, repair, and operating (MRO) products sought to launch an e-commerce capability to serve industrial professionals seeking time-saving solutions for challenging projects.  The company had a vision for a best-in-class experience for shoppers of its online catalog of over 400,000 products. This vision depended on high-resolution product data that was not in place.

Solution

Earley Information Science (EIS) designed and built a product taxonomy from the ground up with the right attributes needed to support the shopping experience customers demanded. The taxonomy provided detailed product information that had never been available to online users before. It provided readily understandable categories that allowed customers to navigate through the large collection of MRO products online.

Results

Product taxonomy design produced rapid discovery and comparison of technical products for maintenance, repair, and operations.  Rapidly built categories and schema enabled 500K SKUs to go live on time and on budget.  Our style guidelines and attribute definitions ensured sustainable, fast and accurate updates, item on-boarding and data fill operations.
