Get Dynamic with Digital Assets

Consumer demand for multi-media experience is putting extreme pressure on many organizations to improve processes for managing digital assets.  Another set of challenges is emerging from recognition that a multi-channel presence strengthens brand recognition and is expected by consumers.

Digital assets, including photos, artwork, audio, and videos must be integrated into constantly changing contexts, across multiple delivery channels.  This creates enormous challenges for producers and content curators.

This four-call series addresses challenges to and best practices for effective management of digital assets for reuse and integration.

Session 1: DAM in the Context of Content Choreography
March 21, 2012 - 1:00 - 2:30 EDT

Content distribution and delivery seemed uncomplicated in the days before digital. Today there are numerous formats for audio and video content - platforms for online, broadcast and mobile, and all the different devices to view and consume content. Viewers want content on their own terms – when, where and how – with the ability to find it and get it without delays.

Listen as our experts present three points of view on how top producers are grappling with this challenge.

  • Seth Maislin will provide a taxonomy perspective as it relates to DAM.
  • Dan Taylor will look at choreographing digital content.
  • John Price will talk about shifts in formats, platforms and devices and how producers must strategize in response.

Session 2: Integrating Digital and Non-Digital Content
March 28, 2012 - 1:00 - 2:30 EDT

This session addresses key topics impacting content integration.

DAM Industry Consultant, Faith Robinson and David H.Lipsey, industry leader and President of the DAM Foundation, will host a lively discussion about digital asset management and its role and purpose in becoming an enterprise application at Hasbro.  Their conversation will focus on how DAM supports the global presence of Hasbro's "non-digital" assets  - it is, after all, the 60th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Potatohead - as well as Hasbro's digital products emerging from their partnership with Discovery at The Hub.   Faith and David will also explore what DAM means for Hasbro's new line of blended digital and non-digital experiences from the toy lines introduced this month at the Toy Show.  They will both comment on the governance and sustainability issues as DAM grows in scope and nature at Hasbro, and as a profession.

In addition, Pieter Casneuf, CEO of ADAM Software will talk about how as a result of a trend to multi-media integration,  DAM vendors are moving quickly to embed DAM components with the overall ecosystem of applications that enable  content creation, management and delivery of content.  Pieter  shows how current approaches to DAM solutions provide a more generalizable framework for managing all types of content through the full workflow from creation, over management to delivery.  The talk incudes a discussion of what in which DAM capabilities can be embedded in SharePoint.

Session 3: Mobilizing DAM Initiatives
April 04, 2012 - 1:00 - 2:30 EDT

Moderated by Henrik de Gyor, founder and writer for anotherdamblog.com, this session focuses on what you need to know BEFORE starting a DAM initiative.  Our speakers bring a mix of hands-on experience and an industry perspective on key trends.

Theresa Regli, Principal Analyst at the Real Story Group,  provides a “DAM Market Overview.”  Multi-channel publishing is driving major changes to vendor offerings.  Theresa provides a down-to-earth view of 2012 trends and guidance on what to look for in selecting a vendor for your next-generation DAM platform.

Following Theresa's talk, Henrik will  moderate a panel discussion with Seth Earley and Dan Taylor on critical success factors and pitfalls of DAM projects. Topics include:

  • What stalls DAM projects? How do you ensure you will avoid these pitfalls?
  • How does approaching DAM as an operational capability, rather than as a system with specific functionality, impact prospects for success?
  • Should the complexity of DAM projects in terms of cross-department workflow, governance and overall eco-system be addressed up front or after things get rolling?
  • Should there be a commitment to establishing permanent DAM services before a project is mobilized?
  • What are some ways to provide evidence that business case benefits are realistic?
Session 4: Video Archiving for Reuse
April 11, 2012 - 1:00 - 2:30 EDT

It is no longer just media companies that face the challenges of managing video assets for re-use. Every major company is now integrating video assets into their external and internal-facing web sites.  In this session, we look at lessons learned from the professional management of video that are relevant to all organizations handling more video-content.

Moderated by Henrik de Gyor, founder and writer for anotherdamblog.com, this session looks at some effective approaches, including how to create and manage flexible metadata models, and approaches for managing content for multi-channel distribution.

Linda Tadic, experience video archivist, provides insights on “Managing Time-Based Assets Through Metadata”.   Creating a flexible metadata model can be challenging enough, but incorporating time-based assets such as sound, video, and film makes the work even more complex.  Analog original source media must be digitized for preservation and access, so the model ideally should describe the relationship between the original and digital surrogates as well as versions since more than one digital copy will likely be created for different purposes. The speaker will address issues in managing time-based assets using mixed metadata models to ensure interoperability, re-purposing, and preservation. Attaching rights metadata to timecode is especially crucial for edited and distributed works, since broadcasting and theatrical content inevitably use music and footage created by third parties.

Phil Spiegel will close out this  DAM Jumpstart series with a presentation on “Metadata for Video Archiving and Reuse.”  Effective DAM metadata for video is more than just about asset inventory management. It’s about the content; and the value content provides when there is good metadata.  Attendees to this session will learn about the importance of metadata to successful DAM implementations, along with strategies for different types of metadata
